Years with Blarney – 1st Year
Favourite cyclist – Bob Jungels
Which of the following best describes you as a cyclist (Sprinter/Climber/Time Trialist/Puncheur/Rouleur) – Rouleur
Most memorable events/races you took part in – Rás 2017, Kanturk 2017
Best results –Results that stand out to me are the days that I am going bad and continue to suffer out the race. Most memorable result has to be Stage 2 of the Rás in 2017 where I crashed with 80km left in the stage. There and then I had every right to pull out of the race, but I fought on and kept fighting for another 6 stages. Finishing the Rás in 2017 is my best result.
Favourite race circuit – Kanturk Stage 1
Favourite climb – Sa Calobra
Goals for 2018 – Get to Skerries! After a mid-season break I will then focus on August races namely the Munster road race, Kilmallock and the Silver Pail. I plan to finish the season with an appetite for more and my head not fried from the sport! 2019 is a 2018 goal.
How have you benefited from being a member of Blarney CC – It’s fantastic to be with a club that is active at entering teams into all the big races. This year Blarney CC has allowed me to race at Ras Mumhan, Tour of Ulster and The Rás.
Advice you’d give to someone new to competitive cycling – Don’t get too caught up on results and just enjoy the racing environment as a whole.
Have you done the Rás before – Yes in 2017
What you remember most (good or bad) from past Rás experiences – It’s a very humbling experience to see the background team working tirelessly to ensure that each rider gets to the start line of each stage in the best possible condition. The stage finishes are also an incredible experience hearing the crowd cheering and strangers saying well done to you. The stage finish is also when go to the team van which is prepped and ready for your arrival. Here the riders can sit down, rest and take in some good food. It’s a rewarding part of the day and is enjoyable to share the immediate gossip from the stage.
Stage you are most looking forward to in this years Rás – Stage 5…..I think it’s going to be a very challenging stage, but it will be nice to ride on familiar roads.
Stage you are least looking forward to in this years Rás – First hour of stage 1 – understandably there will be a lot of nervous riders which will lead to near misses at best. I will be glad to see Athlone.
